Two adults visiting China for the first time, curious about history and food.
Starting point
Already in Beijing, with a central hotel near Dongsi or Wangfujing. Arrival and departure days are extra.
Pace & season
Moderate walking, regular breaks. Written for mild spring or autumn weather, outside major public holidays.
Working assumptions
No stated access or dietary requirements. Three full days, with the palace day scheduled Tuesday–Sunday.
Public sample, not a booked trip or a past client’s itinerary. Times, distances and budgets below are planning estimates. Your dated plan is adapted to your hotel, reservations, interests and practical needs.
The route, in one glance
Three days. Room between the highlights.
Day 1 · Walk north through imperial BeijingMeridian Gate → Forbidden City → Jingshan Park
Day 2 · Follow breakfast into the lanesHuguosi → Shichahai → Yandai Xiejie → Drum Tower area
Day 3 · Give the Great Wall its own dayCentral Beijing → Mutianyu → a quiet evening back
01
Palace courtyards & a view from above
Meet the city’s grand scale.
One major sight, a proper lunch break, and an optional hilltop finish.
About 5–7 km walking Allow 7–8 hours
07:30–09:00 · Breakfast & getting there
A calm start, then the south entrance.
Eat near your hotel and bring water. Allow 60–90 minutes from a central hotel for the transfer, the approach walk and security queues. Have a driver take you to a legal drop-off on the east side; follow the museum’s current approach instructions to Meridian Gate / 午门. A map pin at the palace center is not an entrance.
The sample does not include Tiananmen Square. For a palace-only visit, the museum describes approaches via East or West Tongzihe Road. Check current access controls before setting out.
09:00–12:30 · Reserved morning visit
Walk through the Forbidden City.
Enter at Meridian Gate. Follow the main axis through the Hall of Supreme Harmony / 太和殿 and northern palace courtyards, then the Imperial Garden / 御花园. Take a seated break rather than trying to see every gallery. Leave through Gate of Divine Prowess / 神武门 on the north side.
Allow extra time for queues. Additional galleries can require extra tickets or reservations; they are not included in this sample’s route.
12:30–14:00 · Lunch & a reset
Leave the sightseeing clock alone for a while.
Choose a sit-down lunch in the Jingshan area. A bowl of noodles or dumplings keeps the meal simple; allow CNY 50–90 per person as a meal budget, not a menu quote. If the nearest place is full, take a short taxi to your hotel area and finish the day there.
14:00–15:30 · Optional Jingshan Park
See the rooftops you’ve just walked beneath.
From the palace’s north exit, follow the signed pedestrian crossing to Jingshan Park / 景山公园. Allow around 15–25 minutes to reach the park entrance and buy a separate ticket. If you still have energy, walk up to Wanchun Pavilion / 万春亭; the viewpoint involves steps. Finish with a taxi back and an easy dinner near your hotel.
02
Breakfast, courtyard lanes & local noodles
Let the neighborhood set the pace.
A west-to-east walk with food stops and time to sit down.
About 4–6 km walking Allow 6–7 hours
08:00–09:00 · Huguosi breakfast
Start with something small and unfamiliar.
Take the subway or a taxi to Ping’anli / 平安里, then allow roughly 10–15 minutes on foot to Huguosi Street / 护国寺街. Browse a neighborhood snack counter for miancha / 面茶, a savory millet porridge with sesame paste, and a shaobing / 烧饼, a baked flatbread. Choose a small portion first, or start with baozi and porridge if you prefer familiar textures.
Breakfast allowance: CNY 20–40 per person. These are dish and area suggestions, not a confirmed restaurant reservation. Your personal version names a primary venue and a nearby fallback checked for your dates.
A phrase to keep on your phone
请问有面茶吗?来一碗,谢谢。
“Do you have miancha? One bowl, please.”
Sesame is central to miancha; shaobing commonly contains wheat and may contain sesame. A translated request does not establish allergy suitability.
Head east toward Shichahai / 什刹海, allowing 25–40 minutes before stops. Walk along the public waterfront, then continue to Yandai Xiejie / 烟袋斜街 and the Drum Tower / 鼓楼 area. Allow 60–90 minutes for the lake edge, shop windows and breaks. Tower interiors and paid attractions are optional extras, not assumed stops.
These are well-known, lived-in neighborhoods, not “secret” access. Stay on public lanes, keep doorways clear and ask before photographing residents. Private courtyards are not part of the itinerary.
11:30–13:00 · Zhajiangmian lunch
One bowl, a little confidence with the menu.
Look for Beijing zhajiangmian / 老北京炸酱面 near the Drum Tower. Mix the sauce through the noodles gradually, then add the vegetable toppings. Allow CNY 40–70 per person for a simple lunch and drink. If the first shop has a long queue, choose a nearby sit-down noodle or dumpling shop instead.
Menu note
请问炸酱里有肉吗?
“Does the sauce contain meat?”
Wheat and soy are common; many sauces contain pork. Vegetarian food needs a confirmed alternative, not simply removing visible meat.
A café, another lane, or simply back to the hotel.
Take a seated drink break near Gulou. If you feel like more, walk north toward Guloudajie station / 鼓楼大街站, allowing around 20–30 minutes. Use the subway or a taxi for the return. Keep dinner flexible: a shared roast-duck meal can work tonight, but choose and reserve the venue separately if you want it.
03
A full day beyond central Beijing
Give the Great Wall its own day.
Choose a manageable stretch, with a return journey arranged before you leave.
About 2–4 km on site Steep, uneven steps
07:30–10:00 · Outbound transfer
Head for Mutianyu, not a rushed connection.
For this sample, arrange a return car transfer from your hotel independently. Budget around 1½–2½ hours each way from central Beijing, with more time in heavy traffic. Confirm the pickup location, waiting time, return meeting point and total price in writing before booking. A cheaper shared coach is an alternative, with fixed meeting and return times.
10:00–12:30 · Mutianyu Great Wall
A shorter walk can still feel like a big day.
At Mutianyu / 慕田峪长城, allow time for entry and the scenic-area shuttle. Use the cable car if it suits your plan, then choose a short out-and-back stretch, turning around while you still have energy. Cable-car access does not remove the wall’s steep steps; tower numbers alone are not a measure of difficulty.
Wall admission, the scenic-area shuttle and lift options are separate purchases. The cable car and the chairlift/toboggan are run separately and their tickets are not interchangeable. Recheck operation and weather notices.
12:30–14:00 · Down, lunch & meeting point
Leave a buffer before the ride home.
Return by the same lift system if you bought a round-trip ticket. Allow time for lift queues, the shuttle and a simple lunch near the visitor area. Meet your driver at the pre-agreed location; do not assume a driver can wait at the wall entrance.
14:00–17:00 · Return to Beijing
A quiet evening is part of the plan.
Return to your hotel and eat nearby. Keep the evening free of timed reservations. Do not combine this day with a flight or long-distance train departure; add a separate departure day.
Before you go
The decisions to make before the first morning.
Place the palace day first in your booking plan. Keep Monday for a different day unless the museum confirms a public-holiday opening. The seven-day ticket release is at 20:00 Beijing time (UTC+8); set a reminder in your own timezone.
Reserve first; then settle the order. Check official availability, reserve your own tickets, and save confirmations offline. If no palace ticket is available, choose the park alternative rather than assuming walk-up entry.
Agree the Great Wall transfer. Obtain an actual quote, a return time, a meeting point and cancellation terms. Check which attraction and lift tickets are included.
Save names and addresses. Keep the hotel’s Chinese address, booking references and the route’s Chinese place names on your phone. Check your map access and payment options before departure.
